It's a pretty tall order to design a modular system like this, where each of the modules has to work on its own, but they also have to work together in a way that's actually useful and not just redundant. But ideally, people who start with Maschine mk3 should want to add a Maschine Jam to enhance their setup, and people who start with Maschine Jam should have everything they need to make beats, but still get value from adding a Maschine mk3 later. And maybe that's okay - the Mikro also doesn't have displays, and can't access all the functionality, but that doesn't make it useless.

Without any displays, a lot of features of the software are inaccessible from the controller. When I use my Komplete Kontrol S49 mk1 alongside Maschine mk3, switching to a different page of knobs on either controller also switches the other, so instead of having access to 16 parameters, I have duplicate knobs. Unfortunately shift functions might be necessary to access all the features when using it as a standalone controller, and that brings up the fundamental problem with designing something like this: It has to work as both a companion for the primary controller, and also as standalone controller, and each of those use cases calls for very different things.ДЇor example, at least in the current state of the software, having a second set of displays, knobs, and buttons would be a pretty much useless waste of space and money, because Maschine is not sophisticated enough to let you focus each controller on something different.

I'm not a big fan of shift functions because they almost always end up being a two-handed operation that's awkward, slower, and more error-prone than a dedicated button.
